What language should I study to get ready to go to Afghanistan?
Farsi or Pashto.  Many regional and tribal languages are spoken in Afghanistan.  Pashto was the official language of the Taliban so it was spoken in many parts of the country.  You can make yourself understood by many people of different languages using Pashto.  The Farsi dialect called Dari is now the primary language used by today’s Afghan military forces.  Learning Farsi will give you a solid foundation to communicate with others using the Dari dialect.  The alphabet is the same for both Farsi and Dari.

Can I get CDs to study Spanish while I’m deployed to a remote area of Iraq with no internet access?
No.  Units in remote locations with unreliable internet can only request the language needed at that location, so only Arabic for Iraq.

Do Reserve soldiers earn retirement points for completing Rosetta Stone?
Yes.  The Army Reserve offers retirement points to its soldiers.  Active duty soldiers earn promotion points and Army civilians earn continuing education credit.

How can retirees and family members access Rosetta Stone?
Army training funds pay for Rosetta Stone so the program is limited to all Army military and civilian employees with full, not sponsored AKO accounts.

Is there a military discount if I want to buy Rosetta Stone CDs for my personal use?
Yes.  All Rosetta Stone languages are available at special military pricing in the AAFES online store.  www.aafes.com
