Product Overview - Army Program
Online access to all 31 Rosetta Stone language training courses is free to all Army Active, Guard, and Reserve soldiers as well as Army civilian employees and contracted ROTC and USMA cadets. You can access the training by logging onto Army e-Learning at usarmy.skillport.com. If it is the first time you have used Army e-Learning click the registration button in the middle of the page and after registering come back and log on to Army e-Learning to start your language training. The lessons are self-paced, self-directed and active duty soldiers earn one promotion point for each five hours of training credit they complete while reserve soldiers earn one retirement point for each three hours of training credit they complete. If the Army online Rosetta Stone doesn't meet your needs, Rosetta Stone is also available for purchase at special military pricing in the AAFES online store. www.aafes.com
Deployed Unit - Poor Internet Access Program
Army Units deploying to places where they will have unreliable internet access may request a version of Rosetta Stone that they can load on their unit's computers while deployed.
Unlike the 31 languages available in the online Army program, the deployed Unit program is limited to only the local languages needed where deployed, such as Arabic for Iraq or Pashto or Farsi (similar to Dari dialect) for Afghanistan.
The License for Individual Computers Option
- This option is best for soldiers assigned to remote places where they don't have reliable internet or server access.
- The Unit receives a set of installation CDs with the application and language data.
- The Unit will request a license for each Unit computer so for example if the unit has 12 computers they should request 12 licenses. The program installed on each computer can track the study of up to five different users.
- Each computer will require a one-time connection to the internet to activate the license. Following the license activation Rosetta Stone will run on that machine with no need of CDs or the internet.
- A Unit POC will need to maintain a log of the host ID (physical address in the IP Configuration, a 12 character alpha numeric code) of installed machines. This will allow you to re-host or move licenses from computers that have been changed or damaged or move a license to another machine.
- If you use a standard image for your machines, the files with the language course data could be included on your image for each machine, but the application install would still have to be done on each machine from the application CD.
How to Do a Unit Request
If you are interested in the deployed Unit program, have the Unit responsible officer submit a request by email to intheaterrequest@rosettastone.com . If request is for a Company the request must be from the1SG, Company XO or CDR, or for a Battalion then a BN Staff Officer (e.g., BN Commo officer, S-3, etc.). Unit requests should be consolidated at the highest level unit deployed, whether CO, BN, or BDE.
Army Unit request email should include:
- Unit name
- Unit deployment location
- Projected deployment end
- Language (Arabic, Pashto, Farsi)
- Number of licenses (# of computers you want to install on)
- Point of Contact name
- Point of Contact email
- Point of Contact Defense Switched Network (DSN)/commercial phone number if dialed from the U.S. (if available)
- Point on Contact Address where CDs should be mailed to?
- State that your internet access is limited or unreliable enough to hinder user access to the free Army online Rosetta Stone access on Army e-Learning. usarmy.skillport.com.
- State that the Unit agrees to maintain the installation log referred to above.
Email request to intheaterrequest@rosettastone.com. The Rosetta Stone manager for the Army program will review the request and forward it to Army G3 for Training (DAMO-TRI) for approval, and when approved mail the CD's to the Unit.
If the need for a CD version of Rosetta Stone is for individual use, not a Unit, please visit the AAFES online store (www.aafes.com) to purchase the Rosetta Stone personal edition at special military pricing.
The Server License Option
- This option is best for units that have a server to which users can reliably connect, even though their internet access is limited or unreliable. This option is probably best only if your server network is robust but your internet access is not.
- The Unit receives a set of installation CDs with the application and language data.
- Once you've set the limit of concurrent users then you could calculate the worst case bandwidth usage on your network should all the licenses be in use at the same time. To help you evaluate the impact on your network, each user would draw 3-4MB of data when they first load a lesson and then very small KBs of communication as they do the lesson and answer questions. The size of the complete language course on your server would be less than a CD (a couple hundred MB).
- The server will require a one-time connection to the internet to activate the floating license. Following the license activation Rosetta Stone will run on the server with no need of CDs or internet. The number of floating licenses can be divided to install a portion of them on several different servers if desired.
- If you want to conserve some bandwidth use on the network by your Rosetta Stone users, the files with the language course data could be loaded on each client or your client image, but the client will still have to be connected to the server to run the program.
The Network Installation Guide can be downloaded from www.rosettastone.com/global/support/downloads and selecting the "Network" tab . Disregard references to SMS, the student management system, which is not included.
